PTE Respond to a Situation: format, scoring and tips

You are given an everyday situation, at work, at college or in daily life, and asked to respond to it out loud: make a request, apologise, give advice, explain a problem or share an opinion. It is the one speaking task where how appropriate your reply is to the situation is scored directly.

How it's scored

Scored onContentOral FluencyPronunciationAppropriacy

Content checks that you dealt with what the situation asks for. Appropriacy checks that your tone and register fit: polite to a manager, friendly to a classmate, clear and reasonable in a complaint. Oral Fluency and Pronunciation are judged as in the other speaking tasks.

Worked example

A practice situation we wrote

Your colleague has asked you to cover their shift on Saturday, but you have an important exam that morning. Respond to your colleague.

A strong approach

"Hi Sam, thanks for asking me first. I'd really like to help, but I have an important exam on Saturday morning, so I can't cover the whole shift. If it helps, I could come in from two o'clock, or I can ask Priya whether she's free. Let me know what works best for you."

Greet → acknowledge → explain the problem → offer a real alternative → close politely.

Common mistakes

  • Describing the situation back instead of responding to the person.
  • Using the wrong tone, such as very casual language with a manager.
  • Giving a vague answer with no clear request, offer or decision.
  • Ending abruptly with half the time unused.

Tips

  • Decide in the preparation time who you are speaking to and what you want to achieve.
  • Speak to the person directly ("Hi Sam…"), as you would in real life.
  • Give one clear reason and one clear suggestion or request.
  • Match the register: polite phrases such as "Would it be possible…" work well with managers and teachers.
  • Finish with a natural closing line.

Respond to a Situation FAQ

It means your reply fits the situation and the person: the right level of politeness, a suitable tone and a sensible response to what was asked.
