PTE Highlight Incorrect Words: format, scoring and tips

You read a transcript while the recording plays. Some words in the transcript are different from what the speaker says. You click each word that doesn't match. It rewards reading along at the speaker's pace.

Timings are approximate and can vary slightly from question to question.

How it's scored

Scored on+1 per incorrect word found−1 per correct word clicked

Each word you correctly mark as different earns one mark, and each word you mark that was actually correct takes one away, never below zero. Only click words you are sure about.

Worked example

A practice transcript we wrote

Transcript: "The museum opened in 1998 and now welcomes over two million visitors each month." Audio: "The museum opened in 1998 and now welcomes over two million visitors each year."

A strong approach

Click "month". The speaker said "year". Every other word matches, so clicking anything else would cost a mark.

Common mistakes

  • Falling behind the audio and guessing.
  • Clicking words you are unsure of.
  • Missing small words such as numbers and plurals.

Tips

  • Keep your cursor or finger moving under the words as the speaker talks.
  • Click a word the moment you hear a difference, then keep reading.
  • If you lose your place, skip ahead to catch up rather than guessing.
  • When in doubt, don't click: a wrong click cancels a right one.

Highlight Incorrect Words FAQ

Yes. Each correctly found word earns a mark and each wrongly clicked word loses one, never below zero.
